Blog: How to make a YouTube Video (Beginner’s guide)
As TechSmith looked to identify and market to new target audiences, we chose new YouTube video creators as a likely highly engaged and desirable demographic.
Working with subject matter experts inside TechSmith as well as engaging in rigorous research on best practices and the latest trends, I wrote this article with the intent to rank highly for the term “how to make a YouTube video.”
During my time at TechSmith, this article ranked #1 for the term and was the top driver of traffic to TechSmith’s website, responsible for up to 50,000 net-new visitors per month.

REsearch: Video viewer trends report 2024
Since 2013, TechSmith has been researching and reporting on the preferences of people who regularly view instructional, informational, and educational videos.
Topics include video length, quality, time spent watching, and other metrics. The 2024 report included, for the first time, questions about viewers’ thoughts about the use of AI in video creation.
I assisted in the writing of the research questions, as well as data analysis. Finally, I wrote the report based on our findings, comparing and contrasting them with those from the past 10 years.
Research: The Value of visuals
In 2018, TechSmith set out to create first-of-its-kind research aiming to prove whether using visual communication methods, such as screenshots, explainer videos, and replacing meetings with videos affected worker productivity.
I managed this project from start to finish. Working with a lab in the UK and other researchers, we set up a truly scientific test along with a survey. In many ways, it was a risky move. Because we wanted unbiased scientific results, there was a chance that we wouldn’t be able to prove that our products could help workers be more productive.
Luckily, the results were staggeringly in our favor. This report earned us placements in highly coveted print and online media, and, as of my departure from TechSmith, was still being quoted by outside sources.
In addition to the full report there was an infographic highlighting our findings.
